It's more than a trick for Sinclair

Only a year after narrowly escaping death, Australian cyclist Cam Sinclair stared down the double backflip once again at X Games 16.

Sinclair gunned it for the ramp. two perfect flips, a perfect landing and a great deal of jubilation.

Not only did Sinclair win his first X Games gold medal Friday night at Staples Center in the Moto X best Trick, the 26-year-old from Pearcedale, Australia, accomplished something even greater.

Sinclair conquered death.

“This meant the world to me,” said Sinclair, draped in an Australian flag. “It’s a dream come true to win XGames gold. And it means even more to me because of the last 12 months.”

It was a different picture from last July in Madrid, Spain, when Sinclair under-rotated his double back flip and endured a nearly catastrophic crash. He sustained a broken shoulder, a broken cheekbone, a ruptured liver and was unconscious after a fall that sent him into critical care. Sinclair underwent emergency surgery to repair internal bleeding. His friends and family braced for the worst.

“Twelve months ago, we didn’t even think he’d make it through the night,” silver medalist Robbie Maddison said. “He went to all the specialists and experts. to come back and stomp such an intense trick, I had chills down my back.”

Chills swept over the Staples Center crowd with the next rider, Paris Rosen, who under-rotated a flip and landed hard on his back.

The crowd held its breath as

emergency workers tended to Rosen, who appeared conscious. He was reportedly talking and moving his arms and legs, and the crowd gave him a rousing ovation as he was carted off. It was an image that brought Sinclair back to Madrid.

“He made a mistake,” Sinclair said. “I made a mistake in Spain. I know all about that. Mistakes happen.”

This time, Sinclair was perfect. His trick was reminiscent of Travis Pastrana’s double backflip in 2006.

Sinclair said he blocked Madrid out of his mind before taking on his daring trick.

“There was so much build-up to the event, but I had been out to practice 11 times,” he said. “I felt ready.”

In an event that lost Blake Williams and Pastrana earlier in the week, defending champion Kyle Loza also deemed himself not ready to go with a wrist injury that was worsened when he overshot the landing pit earlier at practice.

However, Sinclair provided plenty of starpower, recording a score of 94.33 with his show-stopping trick to overcome countryman Maddison, who landed an impressive trick of his own.

Maddison completed a body varial above his seat on his first attempt, then did the same body varial and landed side-saddle with both legs on the left side of the bike for a 93.66. Maddison called his trick “electrocution” and overcame a major wrist injury to pull it off.

“I kind of forgot about the injury,” said Maddison, who went 1-2 with Sinclair in their first amateur event together in Australia. “I knew I had put in a lot of work and that I had a shot. I just went to the doctor and got some cortisone.”

Taka Higashino of Osaka, Japan, secured the bronze medal with an inverted scissor kick that Maddison called “insane.” Speaking in Japanese, Higashino came up with a name for his trick. When asked to translate it to English, he smiled sheepishly and said “it was kind of gross,” bringing his fellow riders to laughter.

How far do you need to stick the tampon into your vaginal canal? I put one in today, it seemed to be positioned well.. I could slightly feel it, but it was really just barely noticeable to myself. the string stuck out approximately 7 centimeters (less than 3 inches). I’m using o.b. Pro Comfort Super…
I did it with my index finger, almost until I couldn’t go any further. xD it seemed a little crooked.

Yankees Acquire Austin Kearns

The Yankees have acquired Austin Kearns from the Indians for a player to be named later or cash, so says Jon Heyman and Joel Sherman. the identity of the PTBNL is “still undetermined” according to Bob Klapisch. Buster Olney says the Yanks are already hard at work on their next deal, presumably for a utility infielder but don’t rule out bullpen help.

Kearns started in leftfield for the Indians on Friday night, but was lifted for a pinch-runner after singling in the 7th inning. After a big time start (.313/.388/.494 through June 7th), the 30-year-old has cooled off considerably over the last several weeks (.212/.305/.311 since). the Yanks were reportedly looking for an outfield bat that can hit lefties, and Kearns fits the bill (.353 wOBA vs. LHP career, .339 vs. RHP). It’s also worth noting that he’s a stud defensively in rightfield with three-year UZR of +11.4, but he’s a bit below average in left (-2.1) and hasn’t played much center in recent years.

There’s only $278,000 left on his contract this season, and he isn’t close to being any kind of compensation free agent once the winter rolls around. I don’t expect much, but he’s an upgrade over Colin Curtis.

Lance Berkman is headed to the new York Yankees, who plan to complete a deal to acquire the former All-Star from the Houston Astros on Saturday, a day after the World Series champions obtained outfielder Austin Kearns from the Cleveland Indians.

New York will send a couple of prospects to the Astros, likely to be reliever Mark Melancon and infielder Jimmy Paredes, and Houston will pay part of what Berkman is owed, a baseball executive familiar with the discussions said Friday night.

Kearns left Cleveland’s game at Toronto in the seventh inning, traded for a player to be named or cash.

Phillies: the Washington Nationals roughed up Roy Oswalt in his Philadelphia debut, halting the Phillies’ eight-game win streak, 8-1.

Meanwhile, J.A. Happ, who was sent by the Phillies to Houston along with two minor leaguers in the deal, allowed two hits over six innings in his Astros debut, a 5-0 shutout of Milwaukee.

Friday’s opening of Irving Street Kitchen is as exciting for what it symbolizes as for its potential to deliver first-rate Southern-accented American food. Located in the remodeled Pearl District space that formerly housed the lightly regarded Bay 13 restaurant, service initially will be limited to dinner-only seven days a week, though plans are in place to launch weekend brunch in early June and a takeout barbecue operation during the height of summer.

Irving Street Kitchen is the joint brainchild of San Francisco restaurant veterans Doug Washington and brothers Mitch and Steve Rosenthal. the three have been working together for more than 20 years, first under Wolfgang Puck at the once-grand Postrio restaurant near San Francisco’s Union Square, then on their own at several acclaimed restaurants.

Washington has long been regarded as a front-of-the-house wizard with a flair for design, while the Rosenthals provide dazzle in the kitchen. San Francisco Chronicle reviewer Michael Bauer has named Town Hall, one of their restaurants, among the Bay Area’s best every year since it opened in 2004.

Irving Street Kitchen’s opening is more than just another restaurant joining an already crowded field; it makes a powerful two-pronged statement. First, that this group of high-powered (though resolutely noncorporate) operators would choose Portland points to our city’s recovering economy. the other symbolic significance may be to signal Portland’s arrival at the threshold of national and even international culinary repute. many Portland food enthusiasts have fancied we are already there, but nothing sends that message more clearly than acclaimed professional operators from elsewhere choosing to locate in Portland.

Washington says he was recruited to open in Los Angeles and made 15 trips there before concluding the place was not for them. a half-day visit to Portland last year clicked immediately.

Washington was impressed with the city’s down-to-earth atmosphere and lack of pretense. the focus on local sourcing of first-rate products was another positive. it also didn’t hurt that the Bay 13 operators, on the verge of shutting down, were interested in finding a replacement for the cavernous space at Northwest Irving Street and 13th Avenue.

In the end, Washington and the Rosenthals signed a minimum 10-year deal. “We are in this for the long haul,” Washington says.

The threesome only had to do a little persuading to induce chef Sarah Schafer — who’s been running their kitchen at Anchor & Hope — to make the move north. her brother lives in Portland, and Schafer says she sees the city “on the edge of what San Francisco was 10 or 15 years ago.”

Boston roots

The Boston native has spent nearly 15 years rattling pots and pans, including at 10 places in New York City, most notably at Gramercy Tavern. Schafer will be assisted at Irving Street by Town Hall pastry chef Christine Law.

Though Schafer will run the show, her bosses don’t intend to be absentee operators. as they did prior to opening — while planning, eating, making connections and trying to get a fix on the defining spirit of Portland dining — Washington and the Rosenthals plan to be frequent visitors. During the first month or two, while the inevitable kinks are worked out, Portlanders can expect their presence to be near constant.

The opening-day menu is full of tantalizing tidbits. Happy-hour snacks (all $5) include meatballs in a sauce au poivre, “Angels on Horseback” (bacon-wrapped oysters) with rémoulade, and pork croquettes enhanced with a bacon vinaigrette. On the list of entrees (all under $25), Mitch Rosenthal’s years in Deep South kitchens are evident with the 24-hour smoked short rib ($23) and fried chicken with collard greens, smashed potatoes and country gravy ($18). There is also a slow-roasted duck ($21) and the ubiquitous-in-Portland halibut ($22) offering. On the side is poutine, a french-fries, cheese-curds and ham-hock gravy mash-up ($6).

Charcuterie counter

A selection of at least eight smoked or cured meats can be ordered from the dedicated charcuterie counter or any of the 95 seats in the dining room (three meats for $9, six for $18).

A substantial wine list of more than 150 bottles, focused on Oregon and Europe, includes choices intended to pair with the porcine picks. more impressive still: 11 sleek taps rising from the 10-foot-long, 5-inch thick slab of burl maple that comprises one end of Irving Street’s bar. They aren’t microbrews, but rather kegged wines filled directly from casks at Oregon and Washington wineries to be poured (by the glass or carafe) with an assist from a simple argon gas-charging system.

The space is also a vast improvement over its predecessor. a third of the former warehouse was lopped off to serve as a private dining room. the walls of the remaining 3,000 square feet have been warmed with custom-built chalk boards and wood planking from old barns. At one edge of the room, four booths, each with a closable curtain, also get the reclaimed-barn-wood trim.

Light fixtures designed by Washington are worth a special mention: the main ones, in the shape of large wagon wheels with rustic bulbs, are modeled after chandeliers traditionally found in European theaters; other more whimsical examples are crafted from old glass milk bottles or antique chicken feeders. Washington’s wife, artist Freya Prowe, has painted 26 sumi-ink animal pictures hung above the perimeter of the bar.

The overarching design theme, Washington said, is to “trace the arc from farm to food and drink” and create an atmosphere that is “rustic, grand and warm.”
